Peek at My Week: Nov. 4-10

At the conclusion of each week, I like to share a glimpse into my real world followed by the inspiring links I found during the week. Here's your peek!

Sunday was slam-packed full of activity. I decided to tackle this mess of a craft cart.

As always, it got messier before it got better.

Since it was a beautiful day, I did take a break to head outside for a walk along the Bay.

Once home, I did finish organizing the cart.

And, I put it to good use with some play in my art journal.

While working on a project on Monday, I realized that my tin pieces resembled tacos.
It totally cracked me up!

Tuesday was Election Day, and I did my part.

Waiting for the results made me a little restless, so brownies were made (and consumed).

Wednesday was even less fun.

On Thursday I treated myself by checking out a new local boutique. The stencils above the hooks in the dressing room tickled me. This is exactly how I sort clothes when I shop.

I made another trip out later in the day to work at a local coffee shop.

Since I had done a bit of brainstorming along with my coffee consumption, Friday was a day of creating.

I even pulled out some of my buttons!

I can't say that Saturday was very productive as the majority of the day was consumed with football-watching. However, I was finally able to catch Zoe sunning on her back!
Doesn't this pose just make you giggle?

Anyway, here's some of the other inspiration I found throughout the week:

Now to figure out what this new week holds and how to make it exceptional. Here's hoping you find loads of inspiration in it!!

November Challenges and Inspirations

Each month, there's a host of sites that share some kind of inspiration or creative prompt to help us designers get our juices flowing. As of late, I've found that these challenges have really allowed me to explore and experiment with ideas that might not have occurred to me otherwise. With that in mind, I like to share the links to the challenges I'm aware of, but do ask that you let me know if you hear of any others I've left off this list. The majority of these are jewelry-related, but I'm always excited to find any type of creative inspiration, so please share.

  • Cornucopia is the inspiration at Earrings Everyday for the We're All Ears November Challenge. The reveal for your earring design(s) is Friday, Nov. 16th.
  • Each month, Sarajo's husband, Eric, selects a photo to inspire her jewelry-making. She graciously shares the inspiration with her readers and calls it the Honey Do List Challenge. This month, the photo is of an Art Nouveau mural from their travels in the Czech Republic. The reveal for this challenge is Nov. 26th.
  • Art Elements' monthly challenge is open to any art medium. The November Challenge prompt is Stars with a reveal date of Nov. 29th. You'll need to e-mail Laney before the reveal date to let her know you wish to participate in the challenge.
  • You have the whole month to get in your jewelry-design(s) for the Artisans Create Together Facebook Group's November theme - "Rustic Spice of Life". You'll need to be a member of the group to participate, but you have until December 2nd to submit your design to the challenge album.
  • Facet Jewelry has issued their latest challenge for November and December. The theme is "Sparkling Silver". Make sure you get your design is by December 26th, but do note that voting will begin on December 1st.
I've already got a few ideas for these challenges, and am brainstorming more. I can't wait to see what you come up with for these too. Let me know what's inspiring you this month.

Mixed Media Thank You Cards

This time of the year, there's a lot of focus on giving thanks and showing gratitude as American Thanksgiving is at the end of the month. Pondering the subject of thanks, I recalled that there had been some interest in my handmade thank you cards some months ago. I create these cards from thrifted blank cards, scraps of paper, and other general craft supplies and use them to include personal notes of appreciation to those who purchase jewelry from my Etsy Shop. While I don't plan on selling cards, I thought it was the perfect time of the year to share how they're created.

I fully admit that the main thing that makes these thank you cards special is that they are completely handmade.

I did make a video of the process of making these Mixed Media Thank You Cards.

But if you're in a rush, here's a quick rundown.

Stamp your sentiment in the center of your card.

Frame the sentiment by gluing down scraps of paper.

Use colorful paint through stencils to add accents.

Add more interest with black and/or white paint and stencils.

Stamp onto the cards to give them a little more texture.

Finally, use a combination of pens, pencils, and markers to doodle a few last accents.

And, that's it; beautifully handmade and one-of-a-kind thank you cards.

Of course, this method could be used to create any kind of card, but I love the idea of thank you cards to show gratitude.

And really, what's better than knowing that you're appreciated?

I appreciate you taking the time and interest in how to make these cards and wish you all the best in creating your own. Thank you.

Peek at My Week: Oct. 28 - Nov. 3

I like to finish up each week with a little peek into my own life. And, at the end of the post, you'll find a bonus list of some of the links I found inspiring. I'm running a tad behind for this one, so let's get to it.
The highlight to Sunday was our little outing. We had hoped to eat outside at a local restaurant with Zoe (our dog), but the place was packed. As plan B, we got our food to go, drove down the street to a bayside park, and had a picnic. After eating, we walked the little park and watched as monarch butterflies covered and hovered around the ragweed. It was magical!

Monday was all about getting stuff done, but I did take a moment to check out these ghost flowers under the gardenia bushes.
I had to share. They're so weird and wonderful! An Instagram friend said that they're good for making tea. I'm not sure if I'm brave enough to try that, but how interesting.

While the kitties lined up for their evening treats, I had to snap a picture. Look at Leeloo whining for her treats while Rosalina waits patiently. Ha!

I don't even know what happened to Tuesday. I didn't get any pictures on my phone. I think I spent a productive day getting pictures taken for Etsy. I went outside in the nice weather, listened to music, and snapped loads of shots of jewelry. It was kinda fun.

Wednesday was Halloween.
I spent the day at my family's house and helped hand out the candy! Both of the nieces went out with friends to trick-or-treat. I was amused by this since they're 18 and 15 and haven't gone door-to-door in a couple of years. Silly teenagers!

Thursday was more busy-ness before meeting one of my best friends for dinner.
Well, we actually met for "beer and cheese" since we both have a thing for cheese plates! It was nice to have some girl time.

Friday I woke itching to use one of the birthday presents my friend gave me.
Yes, it was seasoning! I asked her to pick me up some while she traveled since I've been wanting to try the stuff for ages. And, it's everything I imagined. I'm looking for suggestions on how else to use it if you've got any. Please share!

I had a little giggle over finding Zoe on her back, legs up in the air. Before I could get a picture of her in that position, she saw me and rolled over a little.
Still, those hovering legs are pretty funny!

The day led up to another high school football game.
This one was close to home in Fairhope, my husband's alma mater. The smoke in the air was from the firing of the cannon on the pirate ship at the back left of the field. Yes, for real. Everytime the home team, the pirates, scores, they fire a cannon. And, it's LOUD!! From there, I picked up one of the nieces - their high school was the opponent for the game - and took her to a retreat about an hour away. It was a long night.

Saturday ended up being so scattered that I didn't get any pictures. It ended with a win for Bama against LSU. I have to admit that that particular game stresses me out every year. But, we won, and that was a relief and a great way to end the week!

Now for some inspiration for your week! (These are links I've previously shared on social media.)
It's time to face this week and get my booty in gear. Here's hoping yours is fabulous!

Easy Chili-Mac from Leftover Chili

As the temperatures begin to drop and the leaves start to fall, we all start to crave soups and stews and something warm in our bellies. A big bowl of chili is the perfect dish to warm you up inside and out. In fact, chili is such a comfort food for us, we eat it all year round. And since there's no way to make a small batch, we always have leftovers. Sometimes I freeze the leftover chili for later. Sometimes we just eat chili for lunch for a few days. I've even made chili-cheese nachos as a large snack. However, I've found that my favorite way to enjoy leftover chili is in a baked chili mac-and-cheese. It's more commonly known as Chili-Mac.

Let me admit, that I've only been using this recipe for a few months and may tweak it still, but since Fall is in full force, I thought I'd go ahead and share the basics with you.

It begins with leftover chili, straight out of the fridge.
I used about 2 cups of chili for this recipe but had way more than that. I'm sure you could also use a can of chili if you don't have any leftovers. At some point, I'll share my easy chili recipe. For now, let's focus on the Chili-Mac.

Go ahead and get your pasta started. I used about 8 ounces. That's usually half a box.
And, I tend to just use whatever I have on hand. In this case, I used cavatappi (corkscrew) pasta. Make sure to underboil your pasta by a few minutes so that it will cook to perfection while baking. When it's done boiling, drain and set aside.

Here's where we start making the cheese sauce. It's basically the same as making a macaroni and cheese sauce.
Start by heating a large pot on medium and melt 3 tablespoons of butter.

Once the butter is completely melted and a little bubbly,
add 3 tablespoons of all-purpose flour and begin whisking.

Continue to whisk until the flour is completely incorporated and the mixture is smooth.
Let that simmer for just a minute or two.

Slowly add and whisk in 2 cups of milk.
It will start out a bit chunky like above. This was just the first 1/4 cup of milk.

As you continue to whisk and add milk, it will smooth out.
Allow this mix to cook, stirring/whisking every once in a while, for several minutes to allow it to thicken.

Add in any spices/herbs you like.
I usually add salt and pepper, granulated garlic, onion powder, and mustard.

When the spices are mixed in and the sauce is silky, toss in about 2 cups of grated cheese.
For most batches, I go with a blend of white cheddar cheese and whatever else is in the fridge: fontina, colby-jack, gouda, swiss, parmesan. Seriously, whatever's in there. Mix in your cheese until it's melted.

Mix in your drained pasta so it's well-coated in the sauce.
And, basically, that's your mac-n-cheese.

Now we're going to elevate it by adding 2 cups of leftover chili.
I don't even bother to heat up the chili. It's already cooked and will be baking in a few minutes.

Stir until the chili is completely incorporated with the cheesy pasta.
This looks so good, I think chili may be back on the menu next week!

Pour the contents of the pot into a baking dish.
I like to top it with a little more grated cheese and a sprinkling of panko breadcrumbs.  But, that's totally optional.

Throw that baby into a 350-degree oven for 20-25 minutes.
Then, enjoy the heck out of it!

Here are the full ingredient list and directions to make it easier to follow.

Ingredients:
2 C. Chili (leftover)
8 oz. Pasta
3 T. Butter
3 T. Flour
2 C. Milk
2 C. Shredded Cheese
Salt, Pepper, or whatever other herbs and spices suit your taste.
optional: additional cheese and panko breadcrumbs

Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 350-degrees.
2. Boil pasta a few minutes less than directed on the box. Drain and set aside.
3. Heat a large pot on medium, melt butter.
4. Whisk in flour until smooth. Allow it to cook for a minute or two.
5. Slowly whisk in milk until smooth. Let it simmer for 4-5 minutes.
6. Stir in herbs and spices to taste.
7. Add cheese and mix until melted.
8. Pour pasta into the cheese sauce and stir until noodles are coated.
9. Mix in chili until combined completely.
10. Pour chili-mac into a casserole dish. Optional: top with more cheese and some panko breadcrumbs.
11. Bake for 20-25 minutes.
12. Remove from oven and enjoy!

This has absolutely become one of my favorite meals. In fact, the last time I made chili, it was just so I could make this chili-mac a few days later. I hope you enjoy it as much as we do.

As a side note, this recipe was a little...soupy. While still amazing, the next time I make it, I plan to add an egg to the cheese sauce to see if that will help firm it up a little. Let me know how yours turns out if you try this recipe.

It's been two weeks since my last post, but we had our staycation during the first week. Then, I spent all of last week trying to get ca...
