Make a 4th of July Necklace

Pat and I have decided to have a big 4th of July party. As I was thinking through all the preparations, I realized that I didn't have any patriotic jewelry for the occasion. Obviously, there's plenty of cleaning and yard work to be done, but I halted everything to make myself a red, white, and blue necklace.

And, since I figured that there are likely loads of people without Independence Day jewelry; I filmed the process of creating a steal-the-show star necklace.
You can watch how to Make your own 4th of July Necklace on YouTube or in the above player.

The process was easy enough. The stars were cut from thrift store cookie tins with tin snips. What took the most time in making the necklace was filing and sanding the edges of the tin. Once they were butter-smooth, holes were punched so the stars could be joined together and chain added. Easy-peasy!

Now that the necklace has been made, I just need to clean every square inch of the house, make sure everyone knows they're invited, sew some bean bags, go to the grocery store, clean and decorate the pool area, set up tables, finish yard work, buy fireworks, make side dishes, ice drinks, and all the other party prep I'm sure I haven't considered yet. But, at least I know I'll be beautifully adorned!

In fact, I like this necklace so much - we may have to have a party for every patriotic holiday! Ha.

If you have any questions about the steps I took to make this pretty little thing, please don't hesitate to let me know.

And y'all, have a safe and happy 4th of July!

Arugula, Tomato, and Cucumber Pasta Salad Recipe

Last week Pat and I hosted a Fourth of July party. We wanted it to be as casual as possible: bring something for the grill, maybe a side too; come swim and play yard games; we'll do fireworks when it gets dark. Easy peasy. I think it went well.

Since we were hosting, I made three sides: my 'famous' corn casserole, a super basic potato salad (it was really just potatoes, mayo, mustard, relish, and seasonings), and this amazing pasta salad.

I hardly ever make or eat pasta salad because Pat's not a fan of cold pasta. When he goes out of town, I tend to make a batch of this and eat it for DAYS as a meal or a side! Since we were having a summer party, I figured a cold salad would be perfect.

Here's how I made it. Complete instructions are at the bottom. Boil your pasta of choice until al dente. Make sure not to overcook it. You don't want mushy pasta in your salad. Drain and rinse it with cold water when it's done. While that's going, slice grape tomatoes in half and quarter chunky cucumber slices. I would normally peel the cucumbers first, but I knew that there would be some non-cucumber eaters at the party so these needed to stand out from the rest of the salad.

Toss in your feta and Parmesan cheeses, pine nuts, and red onion. You could just use feta, but I have a real love affair with cheese so I can't help but add all the cheese. Also, you're welcome to toast the pine nuts. I wasn't feeling like fussing with the oven myself.

Mix up the dressing

Dump the pasta in with the veggies, and pour the dressing over it all. Stir the whole thing together, cover it, and chill it in the fridge.

Now, I have another confession to make. I have a thing for arugula. When I made this pasta salad for the first time (as a pot luck dish back in the fall), it was the arugula that drove me to do it. Wash and rinse some arugula (in a salad spinner thing). Put it aside until you are ready to serve the salad. If you put it in too early, it could possibly wilt. I just stick it in a zip-top baggie until I'm ready for it.

As I made the salad, I knew there were guests coming that wouldn't eat certain ingredients. One was allergic to pine nuts, some don't like cucumber, onion is an issue for another. I figured if they didn't like the ingredients; they didn't have to eat it. I could have it ALL TO MYSELF! Whahahahaha! (that was my evil laugh). Anyway, the salad did get eaten, some was even taken to other homes. I did have a little left over just for me though. Yay!

Before I give you my recipe for it, I need to tell you that the whole dish was inspired by this Arugula Pasta Salad with Tomatoes recipe from Little Spice Jar.

Arugula, Tomato, and Cucumber Pasta Salad

Ingredients:
1 box of Bowtie Pasta
1 container of grape tomatoes (sliced in half)
1 large cucumber (sliced and quartered)
1/2 red onion (finely diced)
1/4 C pine nuts
6oz feta cheese
1/4 C shaved Parmesan
2 C arugula

For the dressing:
1/2 C olive oil
4 T red wine vinegar
2 T white balsamic vinegar
3 T agave
1 t granulated garlic powder
1 t Italian seasoning
1/2 t pepper
salt to taste

Directions
1. Boil pasta until al dente. Drain and rinse with cool water.
2. Chop and combine in a large bowl the grape tomatoes, cucumber, red onion, pine nuts, feta, and Parmesan.
3. Mix together dressing ingredients.
4. Add pasta and dressing to bowl. Toss to combine.
5. Chill bowl in fridge.
6. Wash and rinse arugula. Place in baggie in fridge until ready to serve.
7. Toss arugula into bowl and enjoy!

Feel free to add any ingredients you think this needs and more or less of anything. I'm happy with it as is but did consider adding broccoli (had it not gone bad). I could also see grilled chicken or shrimp in with it. And, while I think it's a perfect dish for summer, I can eat it all year long!

Do you have a favorite 'summer' recipe?

I'm linking up this recipe at the Link Party Palooza 150 on Lil' Luna.

Holy Cow, I'm 40! (A birthday review)

I've have a few days to recover from the shock and fun of turning FORTY YEARS OLD! I cannot even believe it. I had a few moments of hesitation and 'holy heck', but in the end spent so much time preparing for a party that I couldn't dwell much on getting my zero. I wanted to celebrate the milestone with a bang, so Pat and I decided to have some friends out to the new house for games, drinks, food, and possibly a fire. That's where Pat started.

He built me a fire pit. I'll go into the details of it in another post.

While he was involved in the process of making the firepit, I began to work on making some beanbags. (Please note that while I am indeed crafty, I have issues with sewing machines. At some point I will learn to sew property with my adult-size sewing machine, but since I was just sewing straight lines, this mini one worked just fine.)

After the fire pit came together, Pat started on building cornhole boards. This is basically a beanbag toss game. It took him almost no time to pull these together for me to paint before the big day.

On Wednesday, I went to Mobile to visit with my family. My mom made the fried pork chops and gravy I requested. Please let me say that I'm not really a big fried food or gravy eater, but my mom's homemade pork chops and gravy are to die for. And, eating them only once a year can't be tooooooo bad for me, even at my age.

Oh, and she made me a German Chocolate cake!

We did lots more prepping for the party including ordering other games, frantically cleaning the house and yard, and buying some folding tables (we needed some anyway.)

On the morning of my birthday, I started right off by treating myself to doughnuts and pre-football shows.

Restless before the party, I made me a pair of earrings that are both my style and team colors (Roll Tide!)

Before I knew it, it was party time! Friends and family began showing up. I had invited all of my favorite people. Many of them didn't know each other, so there was some awkwardness, and I felt stretched trying to show off the house/property, introduce everyone, and jump from one group of people to the next. But, I also felt so very blessed to have all those amazing individuals come out to celebrate with me. Unfortunately, once people started arriving I really didn't get any pictures. I was too busy to worry with my phone or camera. (Pat says that was a good thing. It meant I was having a good time. I think he's right!)

My sister-in-law somehow got tasked with getting the cakes. I was picky and asked for two: a tiramisu and a chocolate cake. She rocked this and got some devilishly delicious ones! And, Pat's brother and mom came over early to make homemade ice cream. Yes, I'm so very spoiled!

The party was over before I knew it. Alabama had won, the fire pit had been lit, games had been played, the kids enjoyed the wardrobe boxes I left out for them, and lots of food had been consumed.

The clean-up was fairly painless. And, the amount of fun that was had encourages me to have more parties. I have to note that this was the first party Pat and I have ever thrown. How crazy is that!?

Sunday was dreary and rainy, perfect recovery-day weather as I sat and felt thankful for all my many blessings.

Thank you to all of you who wished me happy birthday on Twitter, Facebook, and in person. Y'all really helped me feel loved and added to the awesomeness of my day. And, a very special thank you to my amazing husband, Pat, who took on the task of throwing me a party, prepping the house/property, and dealing with me. He really is THE BEST! Now to face forty and beyond!

Monday Menu and Madness

I'm constantly amazed by how much more I can get done in the mornings when I actually wake up with/before my alarm clock!

Anyway. . .we had a busy weekend with friends celebrating 40th birthdays (it was a friend's and Pat's coming up in a few weeks.) There was lots of beer drinking and eating of these
I think I've FINALLY got all the crawfish juices out from under my nails!

Now it's time to share what meals I have planned for this week

Breakfasts: Banana bread, french toast, peanut butter toast, cereal/oatmeal/grits, hashbrown baskets, cheese omelets, waffleized monte cristo

Lunches: Chicken bacon ranch paninis, leftovers, soup w/grilled cheese, turkey sandwiches, tuna noodles, pepperoni pizza puffs, bean burritos

Dinners:
Easy pork chops with gravy (crockpot) w/field peas, rice, & salad

I think I might be a bit ambitious with all the new recipes, but they all sounded so darn good!!
There's more Menu Plan Monday at I'm an Organizing Junkie.

While I was at the grocery store this morning shopping for all the goodies to make these dishes, I apparently got featured in this very pretty treasury!

I did get a new item in the shop today as well.
Champagne Dreams Necklace
It's almost time to get started on those awesome sounding paninis and put the pork chops in the crockpot. Then, it's a few chores and some work on the Button Swap and the Crayon Box Challenge. So much to do!! What's up your sleeve this Monday?

Weekend Review (and MMSM)

First off, go to the sidebar (to the right) and TAKE MY POLL.

Now,
I hope y'all had a fantastic weekend. Mine was pretty good. Partied with LOML* Friday night (we drank quite a bit at our fav. Mexican restaurant), went on a bus trip to a casino on Sat (won $78), and just lounged around on Sun until we went to a pool party for a 3-year-old. It was a nice weekend.
I even got a little crafting done and finished a polymer clay cane I had been working on. However, now that it's done; I can't remember what I wanted to do with it. Oh well, at least that's something else done out of the craft-to-do box. I also attached a pendant to a necklace. I'm not sure if I like that one or not; so it may come apart again later.

I was so proud of myself this morning. I woke up with my alarm (usually I wake up and reset it for later) and got some things accomplished. I showered, did some exercising, made some breakfast, unloaded and loaded the dishwasher, and started sorting through the mound of paper in the craft room. I got so caught up in the paperwork, I left the house about 15 minutes late. That's not such a big deal since I decided to work as I ate lunch at my desk.

I was hoping I'd be able to keep that productive energy all day. Yet, just as I got to work I started getting sleepy. Maybe it's just the office and I'll feel better back at home.
Maybe it's just that it's Monday, at least it's a "Made Me Smile Monday" at that. Here's a collection of some really fun staff that I have been dying to share with you:
  • dog dayz of summer
  • wrestler needs a folding chair, fans help him out
http://view.break.com/539758 - Watch more free videos
  • This is actually crafty. Stuffed animal headphones. (found from craftgossip)
  • It's so tempting to press that red button.
  • WANTED - Kool aid man
I know there HAS to be SOMETHING in that above list that made you smile. Otherwise, I'm gonna worry about your sense of humor.

Lastly, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE take my Poll (in sidebar)

Party Hardy or Something

I know I already posted today, but something happened last night that I JUST HAD TO blog.
LOML* and I went to some friends' house for dinner and drinks. We were the only ones there without kids. There were three other couples who each had three kids there. So yes, there were eight adults and NINE KIDS in ONE house. It went fairly well. After dinner, our host pulled out packs of temporary tattoos and candy bracelets. Hilarity ensured.
We found this one flaming heart tattoo that looked a little weird:

But turned upside down, it was SO MUCH WORSE!!
Almost everyone there received at least one tattoo. The kinds found some interesting locations to apply the tattoos. Here's my favorite (with our host/ the mother's permission.)
Now THAT was a party!! We've officially taught a bunch of minors that they should not leave a party without a high (sugar) or a new tattoo. How fun!

A Blast of a Ball

I'm just checking in for a moment to say that the Ball was a BLAST!!
It's so hard to condense the fun of Saturday night into one blog post.
To my ball guests - I'm sorry I didn't get to spend a ton of time with you but it was soooooo good to see you. We def need to hang out soon. You made my night.
I was exhausted by the end of it and my feet were killing me. I slept almost all day Sunday. However, the laughter, music, and pure excitement of the evening are still ringing in my ears. Our leader (Queen) looked beautiful and I hope she had as good a time as I did. LOML* looked fantastic (as he always does) in his tails and I was able to keep the feathers on my head all night without much worry. It was a good, a very good, night.
It seems I am rambling now and need really to get some stuff done so I'll go now.
The work was worth it, I had a ball!!

*LOML=Love of My Life

A little something new

I cannot believe it's been over a year since I chatted with you. I'm so sorry! I'll admit that it feels like I've been pull...
