Earring Holder Display, A Thrifty Thursday Giveaway!

Today's post is a bit of a thrifty tutorial and giveaway all in one.

Let's start with the tutorial.
Several years back, I made myself a variety of jewelry holder/displays. Here's the one I use for my earrings.
It's a fairly simple process that I thought I ought to share with you, since so much of the jewelry I've been selling has been earrings.

First, purchase a WOOD frame from the thrift store.
This one had no glass, the border was nice and wide, and it was $.25 = SOLD!

Then gather your supplies:
frame
safety goggles and dust mask
sanding block or paper
paintbrush(es)
gesso
acrylic paint
crackle medium
sealer of some sort
pliers
picture hanging kit
hammer
scissors
window screen (I highly recommend the fabric kind over the metal kind)
staple gun
glue gun and sticks (if using metal screen)
foam board (optional)
E6000 (optional)

1. Don your safety goggles and dust mask and then quickly sand all areas to be painted (you just want to rough it up so the gesso sticks)

2. Paint a layer of gesso over the frame

3. Paint the frame your contrasting base coat. (I used basic black.) Allow it to dry and then add the crackle medium. (Of course, read the instructions on YOUR crackle medium as they may differ from mine.)

4. Apply contrasting color (this was an aged parchment color) over the crackle medium and watch the crackle go to town. Once paint is dry, apply a layer of sealer for protection.

5. Turn over picture frame and remove any hardware. This probably could be done while sanding, but I waited. I used pliers to pull out these meal tabs.

6. Cut your screen a little larger than the hole in the frame and staple it in. [BE WARNED: If you do use metal screen, use extreme caution. This stuff will poke and pinch and scratch you all up. I only used it because it's what I have on hand. I seriously recommend getting the fabric kind.] I did NOT just staple back to front as my staples were longer than the thickness of the frame. Instead, I stapled from the side OUTWARD where the wood was thicker.

7. Hammer in any staples that are still sticking up a bit. Trim the edges of the screen. Since I used the metal stuff, I used hot glue to cover all the exposed edges of the metal screen for protection. It's not pretty, but it works and it's the backside anyway.

8. Turn over your frame and decide which way it will hang. Lay out the screw-in hook/loop pieces from the picture hanging kit along the bottom front. You can measure it out if you feel the need to be precise. I started with the outside two hooks then did the center one and worked outward.

9. Add a hook for hanging to the back.

Additionally, I added some foam board to the bottom back of the frame with E6000 so that the frame pushes out from the wall a bit, giving the earring backs a little more room.

Here's the finished earring holder.

AND. . .it's part of what I'm giving away.
In addition to the earring holder, I made up twelve (yes 12) pairs of earrings to start off the winner.

These are just some basic earrings and nothing too fancy, but they're a start.

So, how do you win the earring holder and twelve pairs of earrings?
I'm giving you several options for entering
1. Leave a comment on THIS post for ONE entry
2. Go to the Crafty Hope Jewelry Facebook Fan Page and become a fan (if you are already a fan, that's fine too) Leave me a comment on the FAN PAGE (NOT my personal page) that you're a fan and you want to win. This will give you one entry.
3. Follow CraftyHope Twitter (if you are already a follower, that's fine too.) To enter, you need to send me a DM (direct message) that you want to be entered into the giveaway. (I will send you a DM back confirming this entry)

So, you can get THREE entries. Comment here, comment on Facebook, and/or DM on Twitter. You can do one or all three of them. Each give you one entry.
You have through Thursday Jan 20, 2011 to enter. I will be drawing the winner on Friday, Jan. 21, 2011.
GOOD LUCK!

Bead and Jewelry News

Today is an unusual thing, an ALL bead and jewelry post from me. . .

First, if you follow me on Twitter, you may have noticed my excitement when the beads from SueBeads that I won from Andrew Thornton a few weeks ago showed up in my mailbox. I tore into that package, only stopping to snap a few shots to share with you of my progression to get to the BEADS.

I do apologize for the last shot, made today as my shaky-morning-haven't-had-my-coffee-yet image doesn't do these beads justice. They are stunning though!

In other beady news, I've made the plunge and joined the Bead Soup Blog Party hosted by Lori Anderson.
Let me admit that I'm very nervous about this venture. It's not the making something out of beads someone else picks. I've done that before. Nooooo, it's the picking out beads and findings for someone else that makes me shake in my boots. However, looking over the impressive list of other WONDERFUL jewelry artists sparked a desire in me to be a part of that group. This morning, I got the e-mail from Lori that I'm IN!! If you'll check out the sidebar on the left, you'll see that I've already added the badge to prove it! If you want to jump in the mix and sign up, you better hurry up. Sign up ends on the 14th.

I did add another pair of earrings to the shop this morning also. I do love these.

Before I head out for the busy day ahead, I do want to share some links. In keeping with today's theme, they're all jewelry-related!!

Let me quickly congratulate the AUBURN TIGERS on their BCS National Championship win last night. As many may know Auburn is not my team, but I'm so proud that the Champs are from my state and conference. . .AGAIN! Congrats Auburn players and fans.
Now I'm off to tackle to rest of the day.

Wrapping Up the Weekend and Preparing for the Week Ahead

I can't believe I spent almost an entire weekend working. . . err, crafting. . .I mean, creating. Whatever. It was a fairly chilly weekend and we didn't feel like any big adventures this weekend, so we stayed indoors and both worked. Pat's learning some program or something, and I holed up in the craft room and played with glitter, glue, paint, paper, beads, and whatever else I could get my hands on. These items are on my desk to greet me when/if I make it in there today.

We did make a trip out to the bookstore while my car was getting new, much needed front wheels. I picked up this little number there since I can't seem to buy it on iBooks.
As usual, I'm looking for other book suggestions, since I know it won't take me long to work my way through this three-book series. It has also been recommended that I read the Percy Jackson series. Of course, that's another Young Adult Fiction series. If you've got any adult book recommendations, I'd really love to hear about them. I need something that flexes my mind a bit more.

A few items got placed ON SALE over the weekend also.

Button Dangles Bracelet
Blooming Dictionary Necklace

Since it is Mean Plan Monday, let me get to the yummy portion of the post. First, check out these pictures of some of the food we enjoyed over here this past week.
I'm pretty dang proud of how that chicken came out. Check out last week's meal plan post for the recipe. As far as the rest of the menu, Pat enjoyed the muffins, though I didn't ever work up to wanting any. I guess I'll have to make them again. On the other hand, I still haven't made the mushroom soup or calzones. Those will have to come off the menu for a bit. I'm not going to be as ambitious with the meal plan this week.
Remember to check out the other Meal Plan Monday posts over at I'm an Organizing Junkie.
Here's what I have planned!

Caught in the Act (of Crafting)

I've been BUSY, BUSY, BUSY the last few days. Too busy to blog, but there HAS been some beading going on. I've been out of pocket, but not without a craft bag. As such, you might have seen me participating in one of my favorite activities, crafting in public.
In the waiting room while family member saw the doctor
At the restaurant bar while Pat's band set up for a gig last night

I'm always on the lookout for people to ask me what I'm doing (hence the post title), but most of the time they seem to mind their own business. Odd.

Today, while checking my activity feed on Etsy, I found that I was included in a beautiful treasury.
