You Can't Keep a Crafter Down (How I've kept busy)

It's probably about time for a bit of an update. After two surgeries on my ankle, I'm on the mend now. However, I'm still sitting in bed with my leg up most of the time. As such, my view doesn't really change except for how I occupy myself. As such, I thought it might be helpful or interesting to share exactly how I've kept myself busy.

One of the first things I dove into was my Bead Box. Since most everything was gathered, I just needed some wire, pliers, and a bead mat.

I think I mentioned it in the linked post, but I FLEW through that box in just a couple of days.

From there, Pat helped me gather some art journaling supplies in a small basket.

I played around with watercolors and got carried away with painting flowers.

Oh, and The Ugly Art Club had their five-minute challenge at the end of December, and that gave me something to do for five minutes each of those days!

I've been doodling like a madwoman, filling page upon page of a notebook with faces.

And, there have been neurographic doodles.

I even created a mark-making catalog to document different types of doodles.

While doing many of these tasks, I've watched SO MANY VIDEOS. Throughout most of December, I was obsessed with Vlogmas videos. If you don't know, vlogs are basically video blogs and Vlogmas is daily vlogs that run from December 1st through about Christmas. I watched so many that now I'm actually considering starting to vlog when I'm back on my feet. What do you think of that?

Once Vlogmas ended, I began exploring all my subscriptions and re-discovered that Michael's craft stores have online Zoom classes. I began with a bead weaving class
(I actually can't remember if I took this class or just watched the replay on YouTube. Either way, it was great!)

I've been enjoying learning to crochet.
I actually tried to learn to knit at the beginning of this whole ordeal but was learning from a book. Though the motions felt right, my results looked wonky. I'll try knitting again in February with one of these online classes.

And, I've made adjustable bracelets

I've also taken part in a few of Michael's business-related classes. For the most part, they put the classes up on their YouTube Channel within 24-48 hours of the class airing. (The exception is their premium classes.) I've saved a whole list of older classes from them that I want to watch.

I've also been enjoying the Halcraft Collection videos from Denise Yezbak Moore. I made the below earrings inspired by her Wandering Sky Earring tutorial

Some of my own jewelry designs have even been made. I happened to have a tray of pendants and prepped tin pieces stashed in the craft room that have sparked a few jewelry pieces. And, I'm now able to get in the craft room for a few minutes at a time to dig through the bead cabinet if I absolutely need to.

Last week, Pat set up a folding table in our empty guest room (our niece moved out around Christmas) so that I could craft and record while seated in a wheelchair for short stints. My regular craft room is too cramped and the desk there is a tall one - not conducive to my current situation. So, this works a bit better right now.

One of the first things I did in the temporary space was to create a Stamped Shrink Plastic Charm tutorial

And, I've found that the new space is okay for taking pictures of all the jewelry I've made over the past month and a half. Now I've begun editing those pictures.

Oh, and there have been loads of kitten snuggles.
Artemis LOVES that I'm in the bed most of the time so she can come to steal my warmth whenever she wants. In fact, she's dozing in my lap as I write this.

And, that about sums up my last two months.
What have YOU been up to?

Focusing on Life Week 10: All Wrapped Up

Once again, I procrastinated with my bad self. Sally provided us with AMPLE definitions for the term "All Wrapped Up" yet I kept coming up with nothing.

As the clock continued to TICK TOCK at me, I felt as though someone was playing a weird game of I Spy; "I spy with my little eyes. . .something that is. . .all wrapped up." I let my gaze drift around the craft room for something, anything that fit in the definitions. My eyes finally fell upon this 'spool' of old lace I discovered (and promptly snapped up) in a thrift store and I knew it was the answer.
Once I got to snapping, I just couldn't stop.

I even played with the photos in Photoshop some so you could better see the yellowed aging of the old lace.

See how the lace wraps around the battered cardboard. It TOTALLY fits in with this theme.

And the details of the lace aren't too shabby either.

Well, it's a little shabby but absolutely in the best way possible.

Now head over to Sally's blog, The Studio Sublime for more wrappings!

Sequintastic September

It's here, the reveal for

If you don't know what I'm talking about, lemmie quickly 'splain. Sarah at Saturday Sequins proposed a challenge of sorts. Basically, make something with sequins, share the photos today, and express a little on your thoughts about sequins. She even created a Sequin Inspiration Pintrest Board.

I started thinking about this challenge long before I actually started making anything. I made a list of ideas and pulled out my tub of sequins. Yes, TUB OF SEQUINS!
The pictures above express just a sample of what's in that tub. (It's not really a huge tub, but bigger than someone who doesn't ever use them should have.)

I don't know what it is that draws me to them. The sparkles, the variety of sizes and shapes, the holes that make them rather bead-like. It's a complete mystery to me. Yet I've picked up sequins at thrift stores and yard sales, family and friends have given them to me, I've even gone to the craft store and bought some of them new. It's a problem really.

It was a blessing that Sarah proposed this challenge so that I would actually make something out of these lovely, shiny discs. And boy howdy did I make something, in fact I made a LOT of things. . . (You can click on the pictures for a closer view)
With a baggie of multi-colored sequins, some gold beads, and some gold memory wire; this bracelet came into being rather quickly.
I only know how to do a simple crochet chain stitch and not well at that. However, these two necklaces didn't turn out too shabby. Both of them can also be wrapped several times around the wrist for some really fun bling.
This was the bracelet design I mentioned in a previous post. The tutorial for this Easy Sequin Bracelet is at Quiet Lion Creations. I altered the design some by adding the layer of sequins to the front and back.

Here were have probably my most favorite design in the bunch. . .a Kumihimo sequin and bead bracelet. I really love the confetti-like sequins in this piece. I'm still not sure about the clasp, but I'll work on it later.
These earrings were quickly thrown together. They're just hoops, sequins, and some seed beads to separate the sequins.
These were my last sequin project, but one of the first ones I knew I wanted to try. . .sequins in resin! I even got to try out two products I hadn't used yet: Vintaj Patinas and Magic-Glos. The left charm is patina and no-hole sequins and the right charm is patina with a sequin, rhinestone, and a bit of paper. I'm not sure where there will end up yet.

I'm happy that I was able to come up with so many ideas for the sequins. I know none are super impressive and I didn't really make a dent in the stash, but I cannot wait to see what the other participants come up with.

It's hard to express my feelings about sequins. I've already mentioned that I've been hoarding these for ages and am so pleased that I was able to come up with some projects to use some of them. To me sequins are a craft staple. . .like glitter. It's one of those things that was always stashed in mom's craft supplies. However, there's also something so elegant about sequins. Living just outside the birthplace of Mardi Gras, I see a ton of sequins as the maskers ride on the floats and as the ladies are dressed in their finest. Like confetti or champagne, sequins are usually brought out in times of celebration and revelry. However, the designs I've made above show that sequins can be worn everyday for just a little extra sparkle in your life.

Now, you head off and check out what the other participants of the Sequintastic September Challenge including the hostess Sarah.

BTW: Lots of WIPs

My bead table is spilling over with works-in-progress (WIPs), but I just can't seem to get anything completed. Don't you just hate when that happens?
So much to do, my buttons are laying there just mocking me.

I've got lots of blue beads for the One Crayon Color Challenge from Sally at The Studio Sublime.

As well, these luscious silk ribbons came in from DesignTalentedOne and are calling to me to be used.

Now, if I could just knock out a few designs. . . wishful thinking perhaps!

There's more Bead Table Wednesday where that came from over in the BTW Flickr Group.

"What's New in the shop?" you ask. . .

Time to hit that overflowing table and see what I can knock out!! What are you producing today?

Chinook Designs Blog Partner Reveal

Remember a couple weeks back when I threw a bunch of bullet points your way about my mail and giveaways  and general beady. . .stuff?

No? Well, let me remind you.
I mentioned in that long list that I had been selected by Mellisa of Chinook Designs to be a Blog Partner for the month and get to use one of her fabulous ceramic pieces to make a design.
Now, when I say fabulous, I really do mean fabulous!
If you've been around here any length of time, you KNOW I adore the color blue and you should be familiar with my obsession with buttons. So this little gem really made my day! (Thanks Mellisa)

Of course, since I liked it so much I couldn't imagine how to 'better' it with a design. So, I pondered it for a while. As I played around with the ceramic button, it felt so light and delicate and fragile, but it held up to my handling of it (and that's impressive for Miss Clutzy right here. I'd use my two thumbs to point at myself, but I'd probably just poke my boob.)

ANYWAY, back to the design.
It was obvious that the button was a FOCAL piece, but it needed just a little sumpin, sumpin.
At last, I decided to try something new. (click on image for larger pic)
I added fiber. Basically, it's just bits of ribbon, lace, and fuzzy yarns; but I don't usually work with those materials in my designs.

With heavy gauge black annealed steel wire (coated and sealed with Renaissance Wax); I made a large loop, wrapped it, weaved it through the button's holes, and then wire wrapped the top. The fibers are simply tied onto the loop. (I will probably add a little fabric glue to make sure the knots are secure.)

For the chain of the necklace, a small gauge black annealed wire (also sealed) was used to wire wrap coordinating beads in violet, pink, black, cream, and light blue. The wire was wrapped so it formed a bit of a bead cap on either end of the beads.

A hook and figure eight eye clasp was made with some super heavy duty annealed wire and attached to the chain.

I really had a lot of fun creating with this pendant. It definitely allowed me stretch to my imagination (and you gotta love that!) I want to thank Mellisa for selecting me to be a blog partner this month and I only hope that I did her beautiful pendant the justice it deserves.

What's What Vol. 4 (May 18-June 11)

I knew this would happen. I'm just a few weeks back into blogging, and things went awry. Let's see if I can knock out a little bit ...
