Tutorial: Upcycled Mixed Media Magnets

You know those free business card magnets or other advertising fridge magnets we all get? The ones that either clutter up your refrigerator or end up in the trash. I decided to take those and turn them into something prettier.

I seriously cleaned off my fridge and was surprised at the number of these magnets on there. It was super simple to transform them from eyesores to art. I did a quick video on my process too.

Here's hoping this inspires you to art up your fridge as well!

  1. What a great idea, I love that you can take some ordinary, useless objects and make them beautiful!

  2. So cool!! What a great idea!! Too bad that lady reading the book doesn't have blonde hair, you could give it to Professor Storytime. :-)

    1. Debbie, Thank you! Oh....that's an idea!! I might have to consider making these into gifts. I'm really not sure what to do with all of them other than making my fridge more pretty! :)

  4. Way 🆒 cool idea! I have so many of them on my fridge, too many to count. They are holding up pictures and art from my grandkids. What a brilliant idea to let my grandkids help me pretty them up to hold the photos and art that they make! I think they would have a blast! My only problem is I am terrible at painting. But, I think I could handle stamping and doodling. I'm sure the kids would out do me, but that's alright. Anyway, I'm typing way too long. Thanks for the great idea. I appreciate your creativity and work that goes into all the this. If you have time could you let me know what you recommend using? I don't have any painting supplies and I would need the stuff pretty kid safe. Thanks again! Teresa

    1. Teresa, Thanks so much! I think we all have them. Hun, there's no need to paint. . slap some color on there with some paint and then throw a magazine or book image on top. As for what paint to use, I would think some craft acrylic paint would work. I've even seen the little pots of it in the Dollar Tree. Have fun with it! :)

  5. HOPE! I love this idea! I think I would modify it and make it really simple so I could involve my grandkids. The bigger ones could sand and spray paint. Nicholas is 4 and just learned to write his name over a sponge painted background. A great Mother's Day gift for posterity, LOL. The older ones could use some stickers and doodles and I could mod podge some Graphic Stock backgrounds on top for my own fridge. Not so artsy as yours but far less ugly than the ones on my fridge now. Thanks for sharing this. Would you mind if I shared this in my FB creative group? You are so darn clever.

  7. I refashioned a small magnet once but used a printed picture. Come to think of it, we keep some very ugly magnets on our fridge, I should've thought of this earlier :)
