Peek at My Week (Sep. 2-8) and September Art Challenges and Inspirations

I feel a little ashamed that my last post was a Peek at my Week post, and here I am with yet another. Sorry for the lack of variety right now. However, at the end of this one, I've included the art challenges and inspirations for the month as an added bonus. I guess I shouldn't feel too bad since we've been on vacation. But, I'm hoping to have a little more for you before the end of this week. Yet, we'll see how this second week of vacation goes before I make any grand promises.

The week was a bit of a roller coaster as it began with this warning.
I was in the process of cleaning the camper when this alert popped up on my phone. I had heard vague rumblings that there was a storm in the Gulf, but nothing solid. And, then there was THAT! And, that was Monday.

We did a few storm-prep tasks around the house, but generally just kept packing for the trip. I don't think Gordon ever hit hurricane status as they had predicted, thank goodness. As the storm began to really hit Tuesday evening, we chowed down on this comfort food dinner of slow cooker chicken and mushroom pot pie. It absolutely hit the spot.
There were buckets and buckets of rain for a couple of days. Being inside gave me the opportunity to work on the blog some. If you haven't noticed, I did a whole huge blog re-vamp. I'd love to know what you think of the new look.

Wednesday morning, we surveyed the damage from Tropical Storm Gordon.
Patches of our elephant ears were a little worse for the wear.

And, the pool was overfull (Pat actually drained some of the water once). There was a TON of rain!

When we headed out to pick up a few camping supplies, we saw that a riverside park near our house was underwater as Fish River flooded its banks.
That drive is the entrance to the park. Where you see water is usually the parking lot!

This is when we really became worried about our camping trip. We were headed to Blackwater River State Park, just over an hour from home. And, we weren't sure what the river would look like there. Reports from the rangers said that the campsite was fine, but the trails were under water and the river was engorged. It made us seriously question the whole trip. But, we'd been prepping for WEEKS and decided to just go ahead and go for it. We're so glad we did!
The campsite was indeed in great condition. Though, we did find some of the trails under water.

We had planned to tube float on the Blackwater, but because of the flooding, a smaller tributary - Juniper - was all that was open and only for canoes and kayaks.
It was still a magical time! I adore being on the water and the peace of a river float.

On Saturday, we found that the Blackwater River had receded more at the park so we were able to wade in it.
That sandbar had not been visible the day before! And, the water's current was less swift.

Of course, since it was a Saturday in the "Fall", there was football to be watched.
We created a man-cave of sorts under our friends' camper awning using tarps. With a hotspot and an iPad, we streamed ESPN and watched Bama win their game.

All in all, we're so glad that we didn't let Tropical Storm Gordon dampen our plans. Now, we just pray that those in the path of Florence are safe!

As for other inspirations, the camp and storm preparations kept me pretty busy, but here are a few.

  • Sadie Seasongoods shared how to upcycled thrift store vases into DIY Japanese Fishing Floats. I think the results are pretty awesome.
  • I've got another Index Card a Day video up on YouTube. You can watch ICAD 39 being created.

Now for a healthy list of Inspiration and Challenges for the month.

  • Paper Artsy has a challenge in progress to create Artist Trading Coins. This is a newish form and the post has loads of information and examples. But, you'll need to hurry to get your contribution in as the challenge ends September 16th.
  • The We're All Ears monthly inspiration from Earrings Everday is an Ode to Autumn.  Erin sure does a great job making you feel the inspiration. The reveal date is September 21st.
  • Sarajo is back with her Honey-Do List inspiration from her husband, Eric. This month, he's selected a photo from their recent trip. September 24th is the reveal.
  • Facet Jewelry has a Septemeber challenge too. The theme is Circle Takes the Square. You have until Septemeber 26th to add your piece. But, voting on the contributions starts on the 14th.
  • Art Bead Scene hasn't put up the post explaining this month's inspiration. However, here's the ABS list of Monthly Challenges where you can see the amazing art selected for this month and the rest of the year.
  • I'm smitten with Art Elements' Septemeber theme: Faerie. I've always had a thing for fairies, so this speaks to me. I like that Art Elements opens the challenge to any medium. Make sure you leave a comment on the post with your blog address and e-mail that you want to participate. And, the reveal is the 30th.
  • If you're a member of the Artisans Create Together Facebook Page, you can enter their Leaves and Pods challenge for the month. You have until the end of the month to add your piece.
As always, if you know of any challenge or inspirations that I may have missed, please don't hesitate to let me know!

And, I hope you have a fantastic week!

Peek at My Week: August 19 - 25

I actually feel like I accomplished quite a bit this past week. Sunday, in particular, was quite full.
We started the morning with some monkey muffins. I used canned biscuit dough to makes these, the kind with all the layers. This was before I added the condensed milk. Look at those layers of yum!

With some energy (and sugar) in my system, I finished up a necklace that incorporated a couple of salvaged jewelry pieces.

Rosalina, the oldest kitty in the house, made sure to get some head-lovins.

I finished a little art journaling to commemorate several special lives that were lost during the week.

And, I dipped into my rainbow bead box to create a mish-mash necklace.

Our puppy turned two this week. Happy Birthday, Zoe!!

I took several moments throughout the week to soak in nature and respect its beauty.

I mean, look how cute that little green lizard is.

Besides the monkey muffins, I made several other yummy meals.
This one I made up as I was absolutely craving quinoa. It's kinda a taco bowl with fresh corn, black beans, chicken, spinach, and feta cheese. It was exactly what I was craving.

And, I can't resist a yummy breakfast parfait of yogurt, berries, and homemade granola

The big project, though, has been getting our pop-up camper clean for an upcoming camping trip. We've let it sit for several years unopened and apparently had a mildew issue developing. I tried several products but finally found one that worked to get the ick out. You can see the before and after pictures above. What a relief that we won't be sleeping with all the mildew in there!

Like I said, I feel like I got quite a bit accomplished. I hope your week ahead is full of productivity. Here's a little inspiration to get you in the spirit.

Have a fantastic week!

Peek at my Weeks: August 5-18

I've got two weeks worth of peeks for you since last week went a little wonky on me.

We went to the local waterpark, Waterville USA, with several friends and one of our nieces. It was a first for myself and my niece.

While the waterpark was fun and all, it was so nice to come back to our own oasis and grill some burgers (that's the cause of all the smoke).

On Instagram, I shared a few peeks at what I've been creating.

I've been trying to work through some of the components I created for The 100 Day Project and incorporate them into finished pieces of jewelry.

I've also been playing a little with the backgrounds for my product photography.

This is especially true for Instagram photos (since Etsy photos were already taken.)

While out running around, this anomaly caught my eye.
I mean....why?

But, to balance it out I got to take in the beauty of the roses my step-dad gave my mom for their anniversary.

And, there was this beauty of a mushroom that I captured while absent-mindedly perched over an ant bed. OUCH! I guess it was a week of finding balances.

To start the next week, I began working on cleaning out our pop-up camper for an upcoming trip.
I moved all the cushions outside to air out and clean.

Next up is tackling the mildew that's developed from letting the camper sit for FAR TOO LONG. ICK!!!! We spent most of yesterday trying to find a product that would work on it. And, I think we found it. That's today's project.

I worked on a design that came to me in a dream. Alas, it didn't pan out as envisioned. But, I may try a more simple shape at a later time.

Like I said, there's definitely been a lot of trying to find balance. The past few weeks have felt like everything's gone wrong. So, I made sure to put a little win in the week with one of my favorite comfort foods.

This mac-n-cheese recipe is one of my favorites. I like to throw frozen peas in with the boiling pasta and cook up some smoked sausage before making the roux.
Once it's all baked together, it makes it a complete meal!

This flowering weedy vine reminded me of the past two weeks. I'm no fan of the vines taking over the property, but the persistence and beauty of this one insisted on being admired.

My mood the past several weeks has been pretty low, but I've let it run its course and hope to find some beauty of its own in the end.

With that being said, here's some inspiration for your week ahead.

Here's hoping you find loads more inspiration this week and create something amazing!

What to Pack for a Vacation Rental

Packing for a trip out of town can be such a headache. You don't want to forget anything and then have to pay those increased prices found in tourist areas or be in so remote or foreign a place that you'll have to go without them. Making lists upon lists is my (almost) no-fail method to prevent forgetting anything, but I have another trick up my sleeve. Enter, the Vacation Rental Box!

As I mentioned in my last post, we just returned from a vacation in Florida. While the trip had been planned for many months, the prepping and packing seemed to only come in the last few days before we left. However, there were some things that I knew I didn't have to think about. Basically, our vacation rental box was just about ready to go. We tend to call it "The Condo Box" because we used to rent condos at the beach fairly frequently. However, those intimate rentals have filtered off over the years. Instead, we've been renting houses or taking the pop-up camper on vacation trips with friends. This box works perfectly for any of those getaways.

Rentals are a special breed of vacationing. In a hotel, you don't have some of the responsibilities or amenities that a rental provides. I'm speaking most specifically of cleaning and cooking. Of course, if you're not planning on using the kitchen, this list may not be for you. We personally have found that cooking while on these trips is a great way to save a few bucks. While most of the rentals are stocked with basic supplies (pots, pans, plates, silverware, cups, coffee maker, etc.), they may not have all the components you're accustomed to commonly having on hand. After a few condo rentals and a few disappointments in my lack of planning, I put together the box. I've actually mentioned the condo box before, but it's grown over the years as my wants and needs have matured.

Now, this list doesn't include the normal things you would pack for a trip: clothes, shoes, toiletries, toys, books & magazine, etc. It's specific to making sure you have the supplies for the amenities you'd find in most rental houses and condos.

I've got a complete list for you at the bottom of the page, but let me go over why I think each of these items are needed in your packing for a rental vacation.

Let's start with the most basic of basics: Paper Products.
The amount you pack of any of these depends on your length of stay and number of people housing with you.

Paper Towels: While not the most environmentally friendly, these are a necessity for drying hands, wiping up spills, soaking up grease, and any of the other things you would normally use them for at home.
Toilet Paper (hidden in the back of the picture): Most rentals will have at least a roll in each bathroom. However, after that, you could out of luck. NO ONE wants to be without some extra toilet tissue.
Zip-Top Bags: These have multiple uses. They're great for putting away leftovers, soaking meats in marinades, packing a picnic lunch, collecting shells on the beach, making baggie omelets, and numerous other uses. I tend to pack a variety of sizes (gallon, quart, and sandwich) for overkill.
Aluminum Foil: I've found it's nice to have foil on hand to cover icky grills, covering food for baking, or containing any leftover food.
Plastic Wrap: This is one of those things that's just nice to have on hand for leftovers.

Next, Cleaning Products.
This will vary depending on how you clean, how long you stay, and what appliances are available in your rental.

Sponges: If you plan to use dishes at all, these will come in handy especially if there's no dishwasher. Some condos I've stayed in have included disposable sponges, but that hasn't always been the case.
Scrub Brush: I'm quite partial to a scrub brush for removing stubborn foods. They tend to last longer than sponges with scrub sides. This is definitely a personal preference.
Dish Soap: It's unfortunate to find yourself with a pile of dishes, no dishwasher, and no dish soap. I plan ahead just in case there's none available at the property, which is usually what happens.
Dishwasher Soap: The little pods of dishwasher soap are perfect for travel. If you've got some of your own, you can throw them in a baggie. However, I found this small pack at the dollar store. Often, if there's a dishwasher, they'll provide a few of the pods for you to use. Sometimes it's not enough though.
Hand Soap: It's likely that there may be a small bar of soap next to one of the sinks where you rent, but to be sure you have cleanly hands, it's a good idea to go ahead and pack some of your own favorite soap.
Multi-purpose Wipes: Cleaning wipes are just about the perfect thing to include in the box. It makes clean-up fast and easy so you can get back to enjoying your stay.
Laundry Supplies: If you're lucky enough to get a rental with a washer and dryer, I highly recommend including something to take advantage of them. You may just want clean towels or there could be an unforeseen accident with your clothes. Or, you could just no pack as much and plan on cleaning the few clothing items you do take. You may want to go the full route of laundry soap, fabric softener, and softener sheets (or whatever it is you usually use). However, I found these 3-in-1 sheets that include all of that. It makes traveling much easier without additional liquids to tote to your destination.

Coffee/Beverage Supplies
There is nothing worse than getting to your rental late at night, crashing, and realizing that there's no coffee the next morning. I only made that mistake once. Now I pack the following to prevent anyone from getting hurt.

Coffee/K-cups: Check your rental closely to see what type of coffee maker they have so you can pack accordingly.
Coffee Filters: If there's a coffee pot, make sure you also pack some filters.
Creamer and/or Sweetener: Throw in whatever it is that you and those staying with you like in their java to make sure everyone's happy.
Drink Mix: It's nice to go ahead and have something else to drink, so I always pack some kind of drink mix that includes the sweetener (like lemonade) and just needs water to make it.

Pantry Items
You never quite know what will be included in the pantry at a rental property. Sometimes they are fully stocked, sometimes the cupboard is bare. I try to take a small assortment of the items I most commonly use. If you plan ahead and know what meals you'll be eating, it's even easier to pack this section.

Salt and Pepper: The most basic of food seasonings, but I've encountered a few places that didn't even have these. It's harder than you think to cook without them.
Olive Oil: Having a fat on hand also makes it easier to throw a meal together, especially when you're as big a fan of roasting vegetables as I am.
Spices/Seasonings/Herbs: This is completely up to you and your tastes. I use granulated garlic in my food like it's going out of style. I also try to pack onion powder and parsley flakes. Think about what flavors you turn to most often (curry, thyme, basil, taco seasoning, seasoning salt, cajun seasoning, BBQ rubs, etc.) and make sure to include them in your box.
Non-Stick Spray: It's handy to have some spray on hand, especially if you plan on baking. This got added to the box after an unfortunate sticking disaster. That's all I'm going to say about that.

Miscellaneous Other Supplies
These final items are the random things that I found I needed on different occasions and just didn't have.

Drinking Straws: As bad as they are for the environment, I always have to have a straw because of my sensitive teeth. I'm on the edge of buying some reusable ones, but for now, I still pack the plastic disposable ones. I think we used all of five of them on this past retreat.
Chip Clips/Clothespins: Potato chips are an inevitable snack on vacation, but we almost never eat a whole bag in one sitting. Chip clips are a luxury I've found we don't really need as clothespins work just as well. And, if you do need to hang something on a line, you've got the clothespins with you!
Can huggers: There often tends to be a bit of beer-drinking when we vacation (shhh, don't tell), so I like to have a few koozies with us.
Scotch tape: When you need some tape and there's none around, you kinda lose your mind a little. Go ahead and pack it. You may not need it, but if you do and don't have it, you'll kick yourself for it.
Scissors: I'm one of those people that have a pair of scissors in EVERY room of my house. Seriously. (I am CraftyHope after all). Like tape, it's nice to know you have them if you need them.
Tongs: These are a fairly new addition to the box. They're really more for camping but do come in handy for grilling or fishing crabs out of a crab net.
Skewers: Like the tongs, there are more for grilling purposes. Grilled veggies on skewers are so yummy. Just saying!
Twine: Like many of the other items in this list, these are a "just in case". I think they got added when we were planning on going crabbing and wanted to make sure we had twine for the nets. However, it can be used for any number of other tasks.
Bug Spray: I keep this in the rental box because I always remember to pack sunscreen, but tend to forget about the bugs. So, I keep a bottle or two in the box to make sure we're covered.
Lighter: Whether you're grilling out or having a campfire, a lighter or matches is good to have on hand.

Of course, this list pertains mostly to those vacations within driving distance. If you have to fly to your destination, this list could be hand for your grocery trip.

I promised a printable version of this Vacation Rental Packing List and the link should open a PDF that looks something like this:

You definitely want to want to check with the rental agency or owner to see what they provide because I've heard that some don't have some basics like sheets and towels, but we haven't encountered any of those issues in our travels yet. Read through the listing well so you're good and prepared for what's to come. That way, you'll spend more time enjoying the vacation and less time running out for supplies.

When my list was shorter, I was able to fit it all into a smaller plastic box.

But, for longer trips (like our most recent one), I've had to pack the paper products separately. In this case, a reusable shopping bag was just the right size.

There may be other foodstuffs that you want to go ahead and take with you, depending on what you plan on cooking. We tend to buy groceries on the way to the rental or during our stay, once we have a plan. Of course, if there are any specialty items you want that will keep on the voyage, I recommend adding them to your box.

I'm sure that there may be other items that you find necessary for a rental property. Please let me know in the comments if there's something you feel I left out. You can never be too prepared. Happy Travels!!

Camping in Port St. Joe | Part 1

As I mentioned yesterday, Pat and I spent the weekend camping. We and some friends pulled our pop-up campers to St. Joseph Peninsula State Park in Port St. Joe Florida. The park is located at the end of Cape Sand Blas and has the Gulf of Mexico on one side of it and St. Joseph Bay on the other side.

I could easily get quite picture heavy with this post, but I will try to restrain myself.
The gulf side was beautiful as expected with white sand and foamy surf
I loved that there was so many sea oats on the dunes.
Within the park is Eagle Harbor, part of the Bay. The water there is crystal clear and the sea grass is a perfect scallops habitat. We snorkeled for scallops (mostly I looked at the sea life) and played there most of an afternoon, despite the storm clouds in the distance.
This is the sea grass that the scallops hide and live in. Gliding over it in a kayak is creepy and cool at the same time.
The camping was great too. We stayed in the Shady Pines camp area and there were definitely lots of shady pines.
We even got to see the beautiful full moon while out in the 'wilderness'.
Since we opted for a 'tent' site, it was a bit of a tight squeeze. However, we really didn't mind at all.
I'll share more of our vacation, some of the less primitive aspects, in another post. But, I really had to share how beautiful that whole area is in case you're looking for something a little off the beaten path.

A little something new

I cannot believe it's been over a year since I chatted with you. I'm so sorry! I'll admit that it feels like I've been pull...
