October Goal Review

Since it's already the middle of November, I guess it's about time to summarize how I did on my goals and tasks for the month of October.

As a reminder, each week I wanted to complete a general Goal, a piece of Jewelry, an altered Card, at least one Blog post, and a Journal page. I'm covering weeks 39-43. That may sound like a lot, but I wasn't near as productive as I would have liked.

Week 39 (Sep. 25 - Oct. 1)
Goal
This week, I wanted to develop basic jewelry tutorials but that just hasn't happened yet.
In fact, none of my goals were met this week as I spent the majority of it at my mom's house with my grandmother and niece while my mom was on vacation.

Week 40 (Oct. 2-8)
Goal
Making a texture block like the ones in this Gelli Arts Texture Block video was the goal for this week. It just didn't happen.

Jewelry
I was a week behind on my jewelry-making, but was able to exceed my goals with these pieces.
They were all made as part of my Cut Out + Keep Jewelry Superstar feature. And, I just realized that I shared the earrings with y'all last month. Sorry about that!

Card
Catching up on Week 38, I made this card.
It features washi tape as the background and a paper feather received in a swap as the focal. I also doodled with some black and white pens.

Blog
My September Goal Review and Keeping Busy (WOYWW) were posted on the blog that week.

Journal
Like the card, I was able to get an art journal page for Week 38 done.
The background was made from collaged papers, brayered paint, and paint doodles. I added the girl with paint, watercolor pencils, and pastels.

Week 41 (Oct. 9-15)
Goal
I really wanted to get a few portions of the living room organized. In particular, a stack of boxes next to the tv cabinet was driving me crazy. The contents of those boxes now has a new home, carefully concealed in the living room. I'm considering that goal done.

Jewelry
This week, I made the washi tape earrings featured on Cut Out + Keep and a long necklace with one of my assemblage keys

Blog
Not only did I share a great way to use up leftovers with my Chili Cheese Nacho recipe, but I shared some of my finds from the Robertsdale Antique Show.

Week 42 (Oct. 16-22)
Goal
I knew it was past time to start my Christmas List, so I made it my goal for the week. And, I even got it started!!

Jewelry
These earrings and necklace were made, along with another pair of earrings that was given as a gift.

Card
Back on the card-making wagon, I was able to get the card for Week 39 done.
It's a gelli print with some doodles and a chit chat sticker.

Blog
You got a peek at what I was working on from the junk drawer for WOYWW. (It was the necklace above ;)  )

Journal
Two pages were made this week, to make up for Weeks 39 & 40.
I made this page with brayered paint, stencils, stamps, and doodles (in paint and pen). The focal is a magazine cutout and the text was hand lettered.

Gelli prints make up the background for this page. I toned them down with gesso before adding shades of blue paint around the edges. In the center, I painted the sailboat with a combo of acrylic paint and neocolor ii crayons.

Week 43 (Oct. 23-29)
Goal
This week, I had hoped to get my "Shit-to-do" list made. It's basically a list of things I want to get done around the house (home repairs, decorating, and whatnot.) It was a week of ups and mostly downs, so it just didn't happen.

Blog
I did get a chance to share the news about being a Jewelry Superstar as well as my Birthday Desk (WOYWW).

November's already not looking so great in a multitude of ways, but I am trying to stay positive and continue to move forward. I'm already beginning to think about how I want to handle my goal(s) for next year and what I want to accomplish. It's really hard to think about moving ahead when you're so far behind. I guess I better stop whining and get to it!

Have you already started considering your goals for 2017?

September Goal Review

Yet another month has passed. I can't believe it's already time to do my monthly review. But here we are and here it is.

As a reminder, each week I wanted to complete a general Goal, a piece of Jewelry, an altered Card, at least one Blog post, and a Journal page. I'm covering weeks 35-38. I'm still behind on these goals and tasks so some of this is just me catching up.

Week 35 (Aug, 28-Sep. 3)
Goal
The goal I set for this week was to create a blog header that reflected my current interests and blog topics. However, I didn't get to that one. Instead, I was able to tackle Week 33's goal to finish my wood block painting that I had started at the Art at the Beach 2016 retreat.
I'm not positive this painting is done. Once I looked at it through the lens of Photoshop, I realized that some shading would really enhance it. I suppose it will be a work in progress for a while.

Card
This one counted for Week 33. It's a super simple altered card with just some paint, a quick stamp, and a couple of collaged pieces. The word imagine is accented with a stabilo all pencil.

Blog
I wrote my August Goal Review this week.

Week 36 (Sep. 4-10)
Goal
I was able to clean and organize the craft room as I had planned. As well, I completed week 35's goal of creating a new blog header
Here's a peek in case you're in a feed reader.

Jewelry
I finished up the garnet bead and key necklace from the Wonder and Whimsy August challenge.
This counts for week 33's jewelry. Still catching up!

Blog
Two blog posts were completed: Looking Inward for Inspiration and Re-Organizing the Craft Room

Journal
This was also for Week 33. It consists of some collage, some paint smearing, a little stenciling, and some doodling. The image was stamped on deli paper and glued in with matte medium. I painted and smeared around the edges to work it in. There's also some Stardust gelli roll pen on the page to add some sparkle to this magical page.

Week 37 (Sep. 11-17)
Goal
I set out to brainstorm ideas for my future website. Once again, that didn't happen. However, I was able to cut a variety of paper shapes with my Vintaj BigKick as I had set out to do in Week 34.
I know this isn't a super-impressive or big deal of a goal. But, it gave me a chance to learn the machine a little more and familiarize myself with some of the different dies I have.

Jewelry
I do have to admit that I kicked some butt this week in the jewelry-making department.
Week 34's earrings started out as something completely different. I'm so very happy with how these came together.
Week 35's earrings include beads from StudioJuls along with some tarnished and patina-ed once silver-tone hearts.
Weeks 36 and 37 are two different button bracelets for which I'm making some tutorials (You'll hear more about that in a few weeks). However, these two caught me up in the jewelry-making goal. Yay!!

Card
This was for Week 34. The background is just a gelli print on a piece of music. I added some doodles and marks with pen, pencil, and paint. The image is an old photograph. I cut the words from a calendar.

Blog
Cheesy Bacon Avocado Dip was the topic for this week. I urge you to try it. So good!

Journal
Two pages were completed this week!
As you can probably tell, I've been working on lettering.
For week 34, I used some gelli prints that both included raindrops (the same stencil) as the background. I blended them together with a little gesso before sketching clouds. The clouds were filled in with more gesso and outlined/accented with a combo of Neocolor iis and Derwent Inktense pencils. A Uni-Ball Air pen was used to write the words.
The week 35 page was made with various ephemera and collage papers glued around the edges. They were softened with gesso. Die cuts of a gelli print were used to make the flower petals and leaves. The petals are stuck together with a lime green brad. A green gel pen made the stem. Charcoal was added around the page and under the flower and leaves for shadow. Again, I used the uni-ball air pen to write the words.

Week 38 (Sep. 18-24)
Goal
For the last full week of the month, I had hoped to research e-mail newsletter options. While I did do some minimal research, a decision wasn't made. Therefore, I can't count this goal as done yet.

Jewelry
Since I caught up on my jewelry-making goal the week before, all jewelry made this week either met the goal or exceeded it.
The black and white earrings were made using old clip-on earrings that were smashed and cleaned up. The black lines are stamped, embossed, and sealed on there. I showed a lot of the process for these in my Instagram story.  You won't find it there now, but you should totally follow me!
The other pair of earrings and the necklace also incorporate upcycled aspects and are also part of the tutorial project I'm working on.

Card
While I didn't quite catch up on the altered playing card making, I did get a few done.
Week 35's started with some spray inks that were dabbed around and dried. Red acrylic paint was applied through a stencil. The flower was painted on with gesso before being outlined and colored with the Derwent Inktense pencils and NeoColor iis (can you tell I LOVE these two products!?)
Week 36's card was actually started weeks ago when I glued a gelli print to the card. After outlining some of the raindrops, I was stuck and put the card aside. While staying with my grandmother, I picked it back up and added a few marks before gluing down the balloon stamp. I outlined the stamp and left the card at that.
For Week 37, I was simply playing with the lovely Neocolor iis and the Inktense pencils - showing my niece how beautifully they melt and blend. When the card had dried and I looked at it again, I saw a face; the eye in particular. With that, I drew it out and colored it in more prominently. I used a white water-based Sharpie poster paint marker to add a couple of highlights.

Blog
The What's on My Desk (WOYWW) post was the only one I got written that week.

Journal
I finished up another two pages.
You may have seen the beginning of Week 36's page in my WOYWW blog post. I used up some black paint by just drawing squiggly lines all over the page. Later, I played with Gelatos and Colorix crayons to color in the pages (smearing them with water). The words were written with a black Sharpie poster pen and outlined with a white one.
The Week 37 page began as a magazine page that had been previously painted with acrylic paints. It was a little small for the journal so I filled in similar colors around it. I stenciled some shapes and stamped some textures onto the page before picking out some magazine cutouts and a printed quote. These were simply glued down and outlined with a stabilo all pencil in black. I also outlined the whole page with a black pen.

So, that was September in a creative nutshell. I caught up on a few tasks, but still have a ways to go with others. I'm learning to try to create in spare moments and that not everything has to be perfect on the first try. The simple act of creating makes you more creative. I hope you take that to heart. Shoot, I hope I do too!

Have a wonderfully creative October!

August Goal Review

As I sit here on the first day of September, anxiously waiting for the start of college football, I suppose I can update you on how my goals went last month.

As a reminder, each week I wanted to complete a  general Goal, a piece of Jewelry, an altered Card, at least one Blog post, and a Journal page. I'm covering weeks 31-34. Also, please note that I'm still behind on these goals and tasks so much of this will be showing how I caught up.

Week 31 (July 31-Aug. 6)
Goal
This week's goal was to learn to cut with a jewelry saw. However, I just didn't get to this.

Jewelry
I was completely inspired by the assemblage keys I made last month. It took very little time to knock out this necklace.
Week 28 - This mixed metal, mixed media piece features antiqued copper beads and clasp and antiqued silver tone findings.

Blog
I was able to get up a July Goal Review during this week.

Week 32 (Aug 7-15)
Goal
I had hoped to learn a little more about using YouTube (as a creator), but that just didn't come to fruition.

Jewelry
Again, I worked with one of the upcycled keys.
Week 29 - This one is a little longer than the previous one and a bit more feminine with the champagne-colored crystals and dainty chain.

Card
I was able to knock out three cards this week!
Week 28 - I believe the background is some Tim Holtz distress stain with black paint circles overlapped on it. The flower and text are stamps that I colored with watercolor pencils.
Week 29 - The background for this card was a lot of play with paint, stamps, stencils, and doodling. The face is stamp on cardstock colored in with watercolor pencils and outlined with a black stabilo.
Week 30 - Again, the background was just some play with paint and a small gelli plate. The words were clipped from a magazine (and found on my desk randomly). The flower is a sticker.

Blog
Three Posts!! I did three blog post this week. Yay. I showed you my process to cover a mannequin in paper, I shared some more altered playing cards, and I wrote about my recent thrift store finds

Journal
Another three pages were completed in my art journal.
Week 27 - This page had me stopped in my tracks for far too long. I started with some paint topped with molding paste applied through a crackle stencil. From there, I was stumped. Finally, some circles were added in black with white bursts, a few yellow dots, and the word play. I left it at that. It's not pretty, but it's done.

Week 28 - This is just a peek at this page (as my other picture was blurry). The background was made with a gelli print and more paint to blend it. The girl is a face I drew on book paper. The rest of her body is collaged from magazine pages. I also wrote some words below her in paint.

Week 29 - I did this while away from home, using only the few supplies I had with me. The background was made with some goopy acrylic paint, collage papers, washi tape, and some light stamping. I used a magazine picture and created a frame around it with a charcoal pencil. The words were written with a Sharpie water-based paint pen.

Week 33 (Aug 14-20)
Goal
I set out the goal to finish the wood block painting I started while on the Art Retreat. However, that just didn't happen. However, I was able to work my way through the photography and camera tutorials to knock off the goal of learning to use my camera better. Here are the links I used to work on this goal.

  • This article on the 96 tips most photographers had wished they learned sooner was mostly focused at professional photographers, but there are a few tips that would apply for a novice camera user.
  • The Photo Course from It's Overflowing took me several days to work through all the parts, but I think it had a lot of good information in layman's terms.
  • I looked at the first of these 100 tutotials from Click It Up a Notch, and it ran through ISO, aperture, and shutter speed a little faster than the previous one but had the same general gist. However, this has a LONG list of tutorials on how to use the camera, compose pictures, select lenses, edit photos, and just about anything else. It's a great reference, but there was no way for me to work through them all.
  • This "I have a dslr camera now what?" is less of a tutorial and more of a few tips about what to do after you get a camera like insuring it and getting special filters and whatnot. I'm far past that stage, but it is great for those just now getting one.
  • Here's another great, quick guide to understanding your digital slr camera. It covers ISO, aperture, and shutter speed. I REALLY liked that this one showed images of both a canon and a nikon camera. That totally helped me.
  • This Digital Photography course is a 10-15 hour free course put out by Harvard. My head was already swimming from the above information so I decided to keep this as a reference once I get some f the other things I had learned into action and cemented in my head.

Jewelry
I knocked out a few pieces this week.
Week 30 - Again, I turned to one of my altered keys as a focal. Faceted glass in shades of green made up the chain with some gold-tone wire.

Week 31 - This necklace was made for a friend. She gave me a few specifications of what she wanted: box focal, neutral palette, etc. This is what came together.

Week 32 - Last week I shared this bracelet I had made as part of Wonder and Whimsy's August challenge with beads from Fire Mountain Gems.

Card
While I'm still not caught up, these two cards helped make a dent in my list.
Week 31 - I shared the process I used to make this card in my Dollar Tree Altered Playing Card post.
Week 32 - This was just some paint and doodles. I was feeling a little stressed out and needed to keep my head above water.

Blog
I was able to put out not one but two posts this week. I shared some of the Summery jewelry in the CraftyHope Etsy Shop a well as that Dollar Tree Altered Playing Card

Journal
Two pages were also created this week. For some reason, both of these pictures came out a little blurry. Sorry about that!
Week 30 - I just had to get something on the page. I played with my mini gelli plate to get color on the page and then doodled the black stalks with paint, adding white accents with a white signo pen.

Week 31 - I JUST realized that these two pages have similar palettes. Oh well. I was just playing with supplies and techniques on this page.

Week 34 (Aug 21-27)
Goal
Cutting shapes with my BigKick die cutter was the goal but instead I worked on Week 31's goal of cutting metal with a jewelry saw.
I didn't have much success with this goal. It's definitely something I need to continue to work on learning and trying.

Blog
I was able to share an update on our house a year after we moved in. As well, I showed off the jewelry I made for the August Challenge at Wonder and Whimsy

Journal
All week long, I worked on this page.
Week 32 - It's composed almost entirely of stenciled paint. The face was created using a stencil bump technique. The words are simply stamped on thin white paper.

It's now almost an hour until kickoff so I need to figure out what our plan for the evening is. I hope you are reaching and meeting your goals. . . and that you're doing it better than I am!

July Goal Review

August. It is AUGUST! No freaking way! Instead of panicking, let's just admit that July is over (though it seems to have just started). I'm going to cope with it by reviewing what I did accomplish in July. Maybe I'll feel better about the loss of another month by the end of this post.

As a reminder, each week I wanted to complete a Goal, a piece of Jewelry, an altered Card, at least one Blog post, and a Journal page. I'm covering weeks 26-30. Also, please note that I'm WAAAAAYYYY behind in these goals and tasks so a lot of this will be showing how I caught up.

Week 26 (June 26-July 2)
Goal
My goal for the week was to finish up the e-magazine for ZnetShows. And it appears that that was ALL I did as nothing else got accomplished. However, I did complete this goal. And I think Creative Spark Summer 2016 looks mighty fine.

Week 27 (July 3-9)
Goal
This week I worked on hosting a 4th of July party at our house. I mentioned the party in my post about our staycation. I think it was a roaring success. Goal accomplished!

Card
As I mentioned previously, we were on vacation during part of June and had one of the nieces staying with us. She had a few doctor appointments during the week. While sitting in the waiting rooms, I worked on some of my altered playing cards. With this method, four cards were completed. I counted them as a catch-up for weeks 20-23.
Week 20: The background was made with some acrylic paints followed by circle stamps. A few stamped/colored images were glued on top and outlined. I added some word stickers and dots of liquid correction fluid.
Week 21: I practiced some of my face drawing. You can just barely see the words I wrote above the face that say "Let ideas bloom". I did the whole drawing with neocolor ii pastels and the words with a marker pen.
Week 22: Layers of stamps, stencils, and collage papers were used to make the backgroud for this card. I added a stamped image of a typewrite and the words "write your own story". The words and card are edged with watered-down stabilo all pencil.
Week 23: The background was a gelli print covered in texture stamps to create a chaotic image, The phrase is a magazine cut-out that I colored around with a white neocolor ii and then circled with a black one.

Blog
I shared my designs and a little about the e-magazine in my Creative Spark Summer 2016 reveal post.

Journal
Being on vacation gave me a little time to play, so two pages in my art journal were completed.
Week 20: The background was created with acrylic paints and collage papers. The center circles were cut from a gelli print and doodled onto. The words were added with just a paintbrush and paint. I doodled and made marks with a pencil and more of the bright pink paint to finish up the page.

Week 21: Let me start my admitting that this isn't a favorite page of mine. I used paper, paint, posca pens, neocolor iis, and stencils to make the page. They can't all be winners.

Week 28 (July 10-16)
Goal
My goal for this week was to make hot glue gun stencils as I had seen and used some of my friend Tiffany's. However, I just didn't get to it this week. Don't worry, it's further down on this list.

Jewelry
Instead of getting to my goals, I did get quiite a bit of jewelry made/finished this week. I decided to use the muffin tin method and put most of the components I needed to make pieces into the cups of a muffin tin. This totally helped me stay focused as to what to work on next. In this manner, four pieces were completed.

Working L-R
Week 16: You can't really see the focal piece but it's a brass charm with an arrow embossed in it. The chain was made of white glass beads and brass wire. Simple. I have no idea why it too me so long.
Week 10: Talking about taking me too long to complete. GAH! This long necklace is made from buttons that were the last ones on button cards in my stash. I used antiqued brass wire, headpins, and jump rings to connect them. The delay arose when I ran out of a certain size jump ring and couldn't find them anywhere for weeks. Once I finally got some more, I was able to finish up this quirky necklace.
Week 22: The focal for this is one I made. It's some text, a button, and glitter encased in ice resin in a bezel. I used glass pearls and clear crystal rondelles for the front part of the chain. The end of the chain uses antiqued brass beads.
Week 23: While going through one of my treasure jars (old jewelry I buy at thrift and antique stores and put into jars), I found a zipper pull that had these two bright pink wood feathers on them. Using some watered down acrylic paint, I darkened then sealed them. From there, a few black beads were added to connect the feathers to the ear wires. Done.

Blog
This week I wrote up my recipe for my favorite Arugula, Tomato, and Cucumber pasta salad.
It tastes as good as it looks!

Journal
I was able to get one journal page done. This one would have been for Week 22.

I like this one much more than the previous one. The background was made from gelli prints that I glued down then lightly gessoed over. The girl is a magazine image and the butterfly wings are from a book. I glued and sealed them with matte mod podge to take away that magazine shine. "Magic" was written with a sharpie water-based poster paint pen. I accented the word and the girl with a gelly roll stardust pen. As well, the circles at the bottom were made and filled in with neocolor ii crayons.

Week 29 (July 17-23)
Goal
Since I was making great strides in my goals and tasks, I decided to try another catch up week. While I put in a great effort to do this (as you'll see), I still haven't caught up yet.

In my catch up attempts, I got to some of the backlog of goals to be completed.

Week 11: The actual knitting wire portion of this goal (learn Viking Knit) was done weeks ago. However, I needed the thing with the holes to pull the wire through.  Pat was finally able to knock that out for me so I could knock this off my list.

Week 21: Cover mannequin - I've had this flesh-tone plastic mannequin bust for several years now. I love using her for my jewelry pictures but have had to put clothes on her for the pictures. Ever since I bought her, I wanted to cover her with some paper. It really took less time than I had imagined, and I'm relieved it's done.

Week 22: Make Stencils with Silhouette Cameo - My cousin actually finally prompted me to do this when she needed some stencils cut for a party. I made hers on poster board but have since cut some on plastic tabbed dividers for a swap.

Jewelry
Continuing to work from my muffin tin, I completed these two pieces. They were both also inspired by the items I discovered in my treasure jar.

Week 24 is a charm bracelet made from charms and stud earrings that I transformed into charms. It seems to have a bit of a floral, sparkle, pearl theme to it
Week 25's piece is a necklace I made from these bits of rosary-like chain. I think they're actually extenders from necklaces but the necklaces are long gone. It's a simple little thing.

Card
Only one card was made this week.

Week 24: The background was made with a red marker I was using for something else. There are a few alcohol splatters on it too, but they're hidden behind the heart made of music paper. The paper was painted with acrylic paints and outlined with a basic black pen. The rest of the accents were made with posca paint markers.

Blog
You may remember my tale of the new couch drama

Journal
I was able to get two pages made this week!

Week 23: I started this by placing down all the bits of washi tape stuck to my desk. From there, acrylic paint was smudged and doodled on. The image and words are from a magazine. I doodled on both before splattering the whole this with some white spray ink.

Week 24: This page is so very simple, but so glorious! I made some spray alcohol inks using spray alcohol (Dollar Tree) and a variety of markers (also Dollar Tree). I tested them out on this page and let it dry while I cut out hearts from a variety of papers. The edges of the hearts were inked with black soot distress ink. A few pieces of washi tape were stuck on the before I started gluing down the hearts. "Love completely" was written with a brown stabilo all pencil and traced with a water brush.

Week 30 (July 24-30)
Goal
My goal for this week was to make some kind of assemblage piece(s) on a key or other surface. I discovered Teresa Stanton's image of assemblage keys on Pinterest and was inspired to make something similar in my own style. Since I have a hoard of keys and broken jewelry, those are the materials I turned to.

(Sorry the image is so poor!)
These four pieces emerged. I really enjoyed the process and am looking forward to making more.

I also completed a few of my backlogged goals.

Week 23: Make a file of focal images - It took me a little time to sit down and sort through my stash, but using a shoebox-sized plastic storage container, I created a container full of stickers, chipboard pieces, stamped images, and whatnot that can serve as focals in some of my art journal and altered card projects.

Week 28: Make Glue Gun Stencils - I watched Tiffany's video on making hot glue stencils ages ago. She made it look so easy! Mine turned out wonky and weird. It's likely I won't be making them again. But, I'm glad I tried.

Jewelry
Two pieces were made this week. I'm still working on catching up.

Week 26: This was another piece from the treasure jar. I removed the broken pin back from the brooch and filed it down. Glass pearls seemed like an obvious choice for the chain of the necklace. Matching up the shade of blue for the dangles was a little tough, but worked out well in the end.
Week 27: While searching for blue beads to match the brooch, I discovered some amazonite brolettes in my bead stash. Moonstone-colored Chinese crystals top them off for a sweet pair of earrings.

Card
Three were made!

Week 25: I worked on creating this one while playing in my journal. The background's just some acrylic paint brayered on and a teardrop stencil of weathered wood distress ink. The paisley is a stamp I colored in and cut out. "Be Bold" was written with a black pen and there are also some doodles made with a pencil.
Week 26: I picked up some Derwent Inktense pencils (permanent watercolor pencils) at long last and used them to create this flower. That was is. Play.
Week 27: While I played in my art journal and used prompts, I also worked on this card on the side. For the life of me I don't remember what I used to make the drips, but I know it was with a paintbrush pressed against the tops of the card. I doodled with acrylic paint and a pen, made lines with the side of a gift card, and dotted it with liquid paper. The words are stamped onto deli paper and glued on with liquid matte medium. Dots around it were made with a posca pen.

Blog
You were treated with glimpses of my Staycation.

Journal

Finally, a few more pages in my art journal.

Week 25: This was quick work of some collage papers, acrylic paint brayered on, weathered wood distress ink through a stencil, and the image circled with a black stabilo all pencil. The words were written with a water-based sharpie poster pen and edged with a white stabilo all pencil, I love that I was able to keep some white space on the page. I do struggle with that so.

Week 26: Just a silly page created with some of my homemade spray alcohol inks to start. From there, I used prompts to create the page that included collage, doodling, water coloring, acrylic paints, and line-making. The image is from an old yearbook and the words were written on with a posca pen.

So, that was my month for the most part. Catching up is hard, but it really feels like I'm getting there a little at a time. Thanks for bearing with this post. I hope you found some enjoyment and/or inspiration in it.

A little something new

I cannot believe it's been over a year since I chatted with you. I'm so sorry! I'll admit that it feels like I've been pull...
